One way to saturate is to do a hard clip on the waveform.  But Surge has a more complicated method that I can't quite figure out.  Can someone explain the algorithm?  I'm also very interested in the reason for the saw-like peaks I see.  How does this affect the sound, as compared to a simple hard clip?
